  1. Cabinets under kitchen sinks used to be ventilated to the outside for the storage of bins of potatoes, onions and root vegetables. (Basements are not so common in California because of seismic activity.) Young people do not know what those vents were for. I suppose the work just as well for the fumes from all those detergents that people keep under the sinks now.
