I can’t get enough of that breathtaking blue! A lovely specimen of Gentian acaulis found at the Calgary Horticultural Society’s demonstration rock garden.

Do you grow gentian?

I’ve tried to grow Bottle Gentian, but without much success.

I had to look up what bottle gentian look like – how lovely! I love the closed petals…and I read that bumblebees are the primary pollinators as they have the strength to open up the flowers and reach the pollen. Apparently we do have them here in Canada, although it sounds like they are mostly found in the eastern part of the country. It sounds like they are quite the challenge to grow.

I’ve never succeeded at growing them, though I’ve tried a few times.

That is a beautiful color. I’ll have to see if they grow here. They may be a winter plant for us.

That is quite possible! There are many species, so even if G. acaulis doesn’t work for you, there may be another one that does.

Be still my trembling heart! I have only seen those beauties in photos.

I can’t get enough of that colour – and, as befitting alpine plants, they have such tiny rosettes of foliage and those striking large flowers. A bee’s delight!

It’s beautiful for sure, but I have never heard of that flower. I am not sure exactly how to Pronounce it even.

They’re tough enough to grow for you (they are zone 2 in Canada)! Very small plants with large blooms that only last a few weeks in early spring.
