Yes, this plant is about as common here as wearing socks…well, except it’s summer and a blisteringly hot one at that and everyone is currently shod in sandals and…where was I? Yeah. Wild bergamot, sometimes called horsemint. ย Monarda fistulosa (syn. M. menthifolia, M. bradburrana). ย Socks in winter. ย Ahem.

It looks pretty marvelous, especially when photographed in the early morning. ย One of my favourite Alberta wildflowers. ย Me and the bees. ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

    We have several native species, but none look quite like this — at least, as far as I know. Lovely!

      I had cultivated ones in my previous garden – bright red ones (I have forgotten the name). Although they were bee magnets as well, I am more partial to the wild species. They’re all very striking plants.
