Welcome, Autumn!

Sunflower

It is the time of the autumnal equinox in the northern hemisphere….

Here in Calgary, we mark this year’s autumnal equinox at 2:44 pm (MDT).  While I’ll be at work at that very moment, I plan to go for a long walk after my shift.  The trees are changing colour now and the leaves are getting underfoot.  It’s nearly time to put the garden to bed….

I’ve already baked two batches of spiced pumpkin muffins – does that mean I’m ready for fall?  😉

What plans and projects do you have for the new season (gardening or otherwise)?  

Do you have any favourite autumn traditions? 

What new things do you want to try, or places do you want to visit? 

(If you live in the southern hemisphere, what are you doing to celebrate spring?)

    I have to admit I dislike fall. I like spring and summer when things are growing and we have daylight way into the evening.

    However one plus of fall is that it is starting to rain at our place on the coast softening the ground. Our back garden had not been touched for years as the previous owner could not keep up with it. The flower beds in the summer are like concrete and full of ailing plants. I am going to attack these beds when we are out in October and start to plant them in with succulents with the hope that the beds will do better in droughts and not be eaten by deer.

    Pumpkin muffins sound yummy!!!

      I so agree with you on the dwindling daylight hours…combined with the chill in the overnight hours, it’s making it really difficult to wake up early for work. I miss summer mornings already.

      I hope you get all that you want to accomplish done in the island garden next month – that sounds like a bit of a challenge! But it will be so rewarding…you can grow so many plants there that you cannot here in Alberta. You will be able to explore the best of both “worlds.”

    No big projects for the fall, unless you count planting container tulips and other bulbs. Mostly I just want to keep up with basic maintenance and put the garden to bed while enjoying the season.

      Your mention of bulbs makes me think I REALLY have to get to the garden centre this week…I’m running behind with my planting and I don’t know how much longer the weather will co-operate. Glad to hear you’re going to plant container tulips again this year – that’s such a great idea.

      One great thing about these cooler days is that it makes it so nice to do work outside…I’m happy to hear that you’re planting a new rose! What variety is it?

        It’s a ground cover rose alled “Jazz”. Here’s a picture of what it should look like next summer! (EDITED 12 SEPTEMBER 2014 – link removed by request).

    I love your sunflower photo, I see it is a reminder that a change of seasons is coming. Each season is special and different, Fall is so dramatic as the colors change and the bounty of the garden is ready to harvest.

      A couple of days ago, when I went to the grocery store, I saw all of the specialty baking chips and the mincemeat etc. out already…THAT I’m not ready for just yet, LOL.

    It sounds very reassuring that you are putting the garden to bed 🙂 I need to get mine out of bed and properly dressed ( not to mention myself as well!). Some parts of it have done that by themselves but there’s a lot of it that is still slumbering.

    I must confess that fall is one of my favourite seasons. Fall should feel like the beginning of the end of the gardening season, but I have so many projects I hope to complete it doesn’t feel like it is almost bedtime for the garden. The weather is cool, but pleasant now and it is nice to be outside working.

      I do hope it’s a long, beautiful autumn and the snow and frost stays away for a bit yet! You’re right, the weather is much more agreeable now for working in the garden…and the growing has slowed, so there are not so many weeds! 😉 Enjoy your autumn!

    I like to see the larder shelves fill up gradually with jam, chutney etc. and love making seasonal decorations. Autumn is usually very long, warm and beautiful and I can still work and plant in the garden. Then I also look forward to having a short winter break, so much to do at my desk. Spiced pumpkin muffins…hmmmm, really have to give it a try 🙂

      I love your comment about filling the larder…the harvest and the creation of preserves and baked goods etc. are definitely a couple of the beautiful joys of autumn!

    Hey Sheryl! Happy Autumn/Fall to you as well! Even though I love the colors of the leaves in the Fall, it is not my favorite season of them all. Never really was except that I am anticipating my birthday coming up in November, just not the snow that will come possibly with that month. We had such a different summer here this year in Alberta that it would have been great to have a bit more sunshine and warmer temps for just a little while longer, but the days are losing daylight much more now, so Fall has definitely taken Summer’s place. There is the usual nip in the air now that signifies Fall and not too many days anymore to wear the shorts and tank tops. But on the bright side of things, now is the time like you said to get the gardening sorted out and plant some different bulbs to come in next spring and enjoy some possibly newer adventures. Never know what life will bring! We are actually trying to redo our back garden area and just took down a very old fence that needed to be remodeled. There’s our “Spring Project 2014”. Ha ha ha. Enjoy your pumpkin muffins and keep the write-ups going! Love the beautiful flower there too! Lovely! 🙂

      Much as I love the autumn colours and the cool air (and the pumpkin muffins!), I’m sort of sad this year; I really feel like we were horribly short-changed on summer and you know how I absolutely dread winter. I guess I have to do more outdoorsy stuff in the winter – more snowshoeing is definitely in order this year! I just hate putting the garden to bed….
