Sunday spotlight: Phlox subulata ‘Candy Stripe’.

Drought tolerant plant selections may not be on the top of the lists of Alberta gardeners right now, given the extremely wet weather we’ve been experiencing, but we all know the rain can’t last forever (one more day and I’ll go nutty, I swear!).   Perennial creeping phlox (Phlox subulata) ‘Candy Stripe’ is a lovely rockery plant that would fit in nicely with a xeriscaping design.  This sun lover is a great choice to attract bees and butterflies to the garden – and don’t you think the flowers are just so cute and cheery?  You couldn’t walk past without smiling!  Are you growing any types of phlox (creeping or otherwise) in your garden?  What are your favourite rockery plants?

    I grow a couple of creeping phlox, pale pink and bright pink, but no longer know their names! They flowered in May and were frazzled by the early heat, although – as you say – they are pretty tough when it comes to drought. (Now it’s cooler – and wet!)

      Oh, that’s too bad that the heat got to your phlox – even though they like the sun, too much heat too early could definitely be a problem. And while they are drought tolerant, they really do benefit from even, regular moisture, so your weather now must be making them happy! 🙂

    I have purple creeping phlox that has been in my garden for years. It is not looking very healthy any more though. I am wondering whether it does get enough sun anymore since the tree that it is near has gotten so big or whether it has just gotten old. Phlox is so cheerful in the Spring.

      I’m not sure what the lifespan is on creeping phlox; you may be right and it is indeed old age that is affecting your plant. Creeping phlox can tolerate some shade, but maybe the tree is giving it a little too much, as you say – it’s hard to tell which of these things is the culprit. I read that you can propagate creeping phlox through division, but you have to do it right after it flowers, which may mean it’s too late for you to do so this year. I do hope it perks up – they really are so lovely and a purple one would be outstanding! 🙂

        Hmmm … I have divided my phlox in the past. I had a large area that I was trying to get it to cover. I wonder whether I divided it at the wrong time. I just can’t remember whether it was right after flowering or maybe about a month later. Thanks for the input!
