Lady slipper orchid (Cypripedium)

Localized flooding brought on by the recent rainfall resulted in several pathway and bridge washouts at Griffith Woods last weekend. This may have contributed to my difficulty retracing my steps after I took a side path to follow a shaft of sunlight in a copse of shimmering spruce trees and was led into a meadow filled with hundreds of lady slipper orchids. Magic, perhaps. Magical, absolutely.

Against all odds, the county ditch in front of our prairie acreage (north east of Airdrie) has two patches of these orchids. I have dug three clumps of them and transplanted them into my flower beds. They are doing well. The ones in the ditch face greater challenges because the neighbour kids drive over them with their quads, and the county mower chops off their heads a couple times a year!
