A recent trip out to Brown-Lowery Provincial Park (near Millarville, Alberta) revealed an understorey filled with bunchberry (Cornus canadensis), tall lungwort (Mertensia paniculata), and this yellow beauty, heart-leafed arnica (Arnica cordifolia).

Yellow beauty is right. Is this the same arnica that’s used in creams and gels for sprains and bruises?
No…this isn’t the one typically used…A. montana and A. chamissonis are. Apparently the demand for A. montana has caused it to be overharvested in the wild in the past, but it is now being widely cultivated instead.
