Flowery Friday: Amaryllis.

My amaryllis started blooming this week … this is Hippeastrum cybister ‘Chico’. Such a wonderful treat! It is grey and gloomy here today and I can’t stop staring at these brilliant flowers.

Do you grow amaryllis? If so, which are your favourite cultivars? Show me photos, if you can – I’d love a bit more colour in my world today!

Drifting, dreaming.

No way.

I’m not going to do it.

I’m not going to mention the fact that it’s been snowing on and off since September.

I’m not going to consider the notion that it will be another FIVE months until we can even think about getting back into the garden.

I’m not going to whine about the lack of tropical vacation in my immediate future.

Nosiree, I’m just going to take my mug of hot cocoa and browse over photographs from the summer. And here are some I thought I would share with you – I took these in August. The landscapers at this apartment complex in a neighbouring community really did a super job of these drift plantings of (mostly) petunias, didn’t they? I thought it was fabulous.

Go ahead, make me jealous help me dream! Where did you travel to on your last vacation (tropical or otherwise)? What were the highlights of your stay? If you’re planning an upcoming vacation, where are you heading to?

Sunday spotlight: ‘White Russian’ Supertunia.

If 2011 was the year of the “black” petunias, then 2012 might just belong to the whites, specifically this stunner ‘White Russian’.  Featuring creamy white petals and dark purple/chocolate veins and centre eye, ‘White Russian’ spreads to 90 cm and is an equally perfect choice for containers and in the garden.  This pretty petunia is heat and drought tolerant (good thing, because I’m rather lazy when it comes to watering), and, best of all, requires little or no deadheading!  Look for this one when you’re out and about in the garden centres in the next few weeks…I know I’ll be keeping an eye out for it.
